Welcome to The W. C. HILL FAMILY Blogspot. This branch of the Hill family was established May 12, 1901 near Sylvester in Jones County, Texas when Frances Myrtle “Frankie” Coggin wed William Claborn “Willie” Hill. Between 1902 and 1919, seven children were born to the couple: Andrew Darwin Hill, William Wallace "Red" Hill, Orvel Francis Hill, Alton Jackson "A. J." Hill, Elsie Lou Hill Smith (my maternal grandmother), Jewell Faye Hill Winter, and Alfred Lavell "Fritz" Hill.

A. J. & Sylvia
My mother has written on the reverse, "A. J. & Sylvia." Mom was born in 1933 and I'd say she is around 4 years old in this photo. If this were indeed shot in 1937, A. J. (b. 17 Sep 1908) would be around 29.
The faint mountains in the background look like Alpine, TX to me, where the Smiths lived.

I also recognize the Alpine skyline, and believe this was probably taken in the back yard of the first house I remember living in. This was on the north side of town, just a block or so west of the soda pop bottling plant on the highway to Fort Davis, near the intersection of Loop Road. - Bud
ReplyDeleteDuring my short stay in Alpine last fall, to attend the wedding in Marathon of Jana and Jeff's son Matt and Kym Lavigne, I rode over to that old rock house to see if it was still there. It is, and it's pretty much as I remember it. I've always been fond of that house. - Bud
