Mama & Papa Hill

Was this snapshot taken at the Hill Home, built in 1926?  The photo's reverse reads "Mama & Papa Hill."  Any ideas on the date... or even the decade?

  1. Wow, Papa's 3-piece suit fits him perfectly!

They're both wearing their Sunday best, and are posed looking south, near the southwest corner of their front porch. Shadows indicate that the picture was taken about 10 am. And since HVAC didn't exist, the 3-piece suit suggests that this photo was taken during cold weather.

That porch contained several chairs, and was where the grown-ups held after-dinner discussions regarding weather, crop prices, what ever happened to various acquaintances, and whoever married somebody's daughter.

That was before TV. Back then, people talked to each other.

  2. Jana,
I see I forgot to sign my comment above, re the suit and the lengthy discussions on the porch from the end of dinner until bedtime.

I'm delighted with your blog, and enjoying looking at the pictures and comments. Many of these photos are new to me. I have several favorites, for different reasons.

I really like the one of Elsie Lou's parents dressed up for church. The reason is because I just don't remember ever seeing Papa looking so dignified, authoritative, wealthy, and successful. It's a dimension of his that maybe I was too young to have noticed, or just wasn't around at the right time. It's quite a surprise, because I remember him in his usual farm work clothes.

One characteristic about his daily attire was that he always wore long sleeved shirts, with rubber bands just above the elbows--I think to keep his cuffs from getting dirty, or getting caught in machinery--don't know. I don't remember any other grown-up wearing rubber bands. And I challenge you to find a photo of him wearing a short sleeve shirt!

    Thanks, with love,
    Bud
